Some symptoms of extreme tiredness and the reasons for it
Whenever we feel fatigue, we tend to blame it all on our existing lifestyle. And most of the times, we are right. So, the obvious question-“Why am I so tired” can be best answered with “I am leading an unhealthy lifestyle”. What we can do at this time is make some significant lifestyle changes. But even after all this; if you feel the indications of tiredness then it could be the symptoms of a serious medical condition that can be easily treated. Feeling the fatigue is a very common phenomenon and it generally occurs more in women than men. When it intensifies, it causes CFS or chronic fatigue syndrome. The various reasons of tiredness can be broadly classified into three categories.
Reasons Of Tiredness
- Physical causes (Anaemia, thyroid, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, sleep apnoea)
- Psychological causes (Depression, stress)
- Lifestyle causes (Dehydration, exercise, nutrient deficient)
Why am I so tired? There are several reasons for this which can be either physical, psychological or lifestyle related.
Physical causes of tiredness
Anaemia: Lack of red blood cells that brings oxygen from your lungs to the tissues and cells causes fatigue in anaemia. One feels weak and short of breath in this case. Anaemia is caused by an iron or vitamin deficiency, blood loss, internal bleeding, or a chronic disease such as rheumatoid arthritis, cancer, or kidney failure. Women of childbearing age are especially susceptible to iron-deficiency anaemia because of blood loss during menstruation and the body’s need for extra iron during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Thyroid disease: When your thyroid hormones go out of control, even your day to day activities will make you tired. Too much of thyroid hormones (hyperthyroidism) can cause muscle fatigue and weakness.
Diabetes: People with Type 2 diabetes cannot use glucose properly which fuels our body, causing it to build up in our bloodstream. Without enough energy to keep the body running smoothly, people with diabetes notice fatigue as the early warning signs.
Rheumatoid arthritis: Early detection of rheumatoid arthritis is not easy but there are some indications to this disease. RA happens when your immune system turns against itself and attacks healthy joint tissue, sometimes resulting in irreversible damage to bone and cartilage. Fatigue, low energy, loss of appetite and joint pain are some symptoms of this disease. Anaemia and thyroid disorders, which also cause fatigue, are even more common in people with RA.
Sleep apnoea: Sleep apnoea is a disorder characterized by brief interruptions of breathing during sleep. If you wake up feeling tired then you have got this sleep disrupting problem, no matter how much rest you think you have taken.
Psychological causes of tiredness
Depression: It is a major illness that affects the way we eat, sleep or feel the way about ourselves or other people. Without treatment, the symptoms of depression may last for weeks, months or even years. Depression is not experienced in the same way by different people but the general symptoms include decreased energy or fatigue, changes in sleeping and eating patterns, problems with memory and concentration, and feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness, and negativity.
Stress: Trying to do everything at the same time, can set your stress hormones spiralling out of control. Normally, the level of stress hormone cortisol is highest in the morning and dips down at night. But, chronic stress throws this pattern out of control which can disrupt your sleep at night. The result would be excessive tiredness in the morning.
Lifestyle causes of tiredness
Dehydration: According to a study, women who fail to replace 1.5% of their body weight experience low energy levels or fatigue and mood swings. Drink plenty of water as required by your body to keep yourself well hydrated.
Exercise: Why am I so tired? Lack of exercise or too much of it can cause fatigue. A sedentary lifestyle is neither good for your mood or your body. Frequent mood swings and excessive tiredness are the by product of a lifestyle that lacks exercise. On the other hand if you are exercising too much, lack of sleep and fatigue can be the uninvited guests. These are the signs that you are pushing your body beyond its endurance limits. Striking the right balance between physical activities and rest is essential.
Nutrient deficiency: Why am I so tired? This is also because of nutrient deficiency like vitamin B12 and iron. Vitamin B12 is required by your body to make red blood cells and keep the neurons functioning properly. Deficiency decreases the amount of oxygen your blood can carry through your body giving you the feeling of sleeping-with –your-eyes open.
When excessive tiredness or fatigue reaches its apex, it is known as CFS or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. This condition causes a strong fatigue that renders one incapable of carrying out their daily tasks. These people are easily exhausted with a little exertion.
